Mansfield Shawshank Redemption Anniversary
This year marks the 25th anniversary of The Shawshank Redemption, the beloved 1994 film that was shot almost entirely in and around Mansfield, Ohio. Our REALTORS® are very excited to welcome the anniversary celebration to Mansfield on August 16-18, not only because it's one of our favorite movies of all time, but also because it gives us a chance to revisit some of our favorite Mansfield landmarks that appeared in the film!

The Shawshank Redemption 25th Anniversary Weekend takes place in Mansfield August 16-18, 2019. Tickets are on sale now, providing an immersive experience that includes touring the filming sites and getting to meet some of the cast and filmmakers. Events include:

  • A screening of the Shawshank Redemption at the Renaissance Theatre, where the movie originally premiered in 1994.

  • Exclusive Shawshank Reception and Actor Autograph Session at the Ohio State Reformatory, the historic prison that stood in for Shawshank in the film.

  • Background Actors Panel, featuring extras and background actors who have fascinating stories to tell about the film.

  • Shawshank Authors Panel and Production Panel, featuring unique insights from the writers and production team behind the movie.

Mansfield is getting ready to have a great time this August. Several actors including Bob Gunton (Warden Norton), William Sadler (Heywood) and Mark Rolston (Bogs) are scheduled to be in attendance. A lot of local businesses are getting into the action too, like Doc's Deli, a local favorite eatery that will be debuting "The Caged Bird" sandwich for the occasion.

Of course, the real highlight of the weekend is an opportunity to see numerous locations that made it to the silver screen thanks to The Shawshank Redemption. You can visit them all along The Shawshank Trail, which includes more than a dozen locations in Mansfield and the surrounding communities.

Mansfield Shawshank Ohio State Reformatory

Many fans are shocked to learn that, although The Shawshank Redemption was set in Maine, most of the filming took place here in Ohio. The most famous site is the Ohio State Reformatory, a historic (and some say haunted) prison that was built between 1886 and 1910 and remained in operation until 1990. The imposing stone architecture of this castle-like prison was just what the filmmakers were looking for, and the majority of The Shawshank Redemption was filmed here.

The prison is open to the public for guided tours throughout most of the year. You can see the prison yard, Andy Dufresne's cell block, Warden Norton's office, and Andy's escape tunnel. Even the set used for Brooks' hotel room was actually located here in the prison. You can also check out some of these additional locations in Mansfield that appeared in the film:

  • The Bissman Building, home to the now-closed Brewer Hotel, which was used as the exterior of Brooks' hotel and the Portland Daily Bugle in the movie.

  • Malabar Farm State Park, home to the Shawshank oak tree, as well as the cabin used for the opening scene.

    Mansfield Carrousel Antiques
  • Carrousel Antiques, which was featured in the film as the pawn shop window that Red (Morgan Freeman) looks through and sees the compass that leads him to the oak tree.

  • KV Market, better known as the Food-Way where both Brooks and Red worked in The Shawshank Redemption.

  • Central Park in Mansfield, where you can sit on Brooks' bench.
