DIY Landscaping Projects - Ashland, OH | Haring Realty

Summer is prime time for enjoying the outdoors—specifically, the landscaping you've created on the property you acquired from among Ashland homes for sale. But maybe it's time to do a little upgrading to enhance the looks of your landscape for your enjoyment and boost the value of your property if you're looking to list it. The good news is that you can accomplish these goals with some fairly easy DIY landscaping projects.

Our REALTORS®  have a good eye for simple hacks to improve landscaping. Let's look at a few of them.

  1. Strike a Balance
You don't want too much of either. Too much lawn is a boring monoculture, lacking visual interest. Too many plantings look busy and overwhelming. Vary your visual elements to offset and complement each other: plant a few strategically placed trees; erect structures like a wall, a rock border, or a pathway; create a flower garden bordering the house or along a sidewalk. Play with it. Sketch some ideas and work out color schemes with flowers and shades of green and gray shrubs as a backdrop.

  2. Edge the Garden
You don't need to do this with expensive bricks or stone. Sometimes homeowners luck out and dig up nice landscaping rocks on their property. Or, maybe you can find some suitable rocks on a country road to load up and take home. They don't necessarily need to be held in place with mortar but can be dry stacked and, if heavy enough, should stay in place. Edging a flower planting, some shrubs, or around a tree is a great way to create visual interest by setting off the planting with a rock border.

  3. Add Lighting
If you have old light fixtures, it's probably time to update them. Look for fixtures that reflect the style of your home. Light can be used to dramatic effect in your plantings, along pathways, or amidst shrubs and trees. The lighting will also help guests see better. Experiment with white-flowering plants, such as datura, night-blooming jasmine (you may have to replace it after a cold winter), and perhaps even simple white impatiens and petunias, which will reflect light at night. Sweet-smelling white flowers will also attract pollinators.

  4. Create Pathways
Pathways can help connect the various elements of your landscape. For instance, you can create a butterfly garden along the side of the house and add a patio where you can sit, have a drink, and watch the colorful display of your butterflies. A pathway connecting the two adds visual interest and helps break up a monotonous green lawn. Line the pathway with stone or flowers.

  5. Add a Climbing Wall
Have a space you don't know what to do with? Add a trellis or other structure to grow climbing plants such as clematis or roses.

  6. Install a Water Fountain
A water fountain can be as complex or as simple as you choose. You might purchase a solar-powered fountain that recirculates water with a pump and lighting that comes on at night. These are all relatively inexpensive from a home store and easy to assemble. Or, you may want to hire an expert in creating stone structures with the water piped in and recirculating. Your local birds will thank you.

These projects will get you started, and you're guaranteed to love the enhanced visual interest they will create. Have questions? Contact us today.
