Home Safety During Vacation - Haring Realty

Can you imagine coming home from an amazing vacation to find your home has been broken into? Unfortunately, it is an all-too-common occurrence. Our REALTORS® have a few recommendations for you that can help ensure this never happens to you.

  • Shh! Mum's the word!
When you have the opportunity to take a vacation to a fabulous destination, you want to tell everyone all about it. Contain your excitement and wait until your return to share photographs on social media. Keep the information private until you return.

  • Share Plans with Trusted Friends.
Your neighbors can then spot inappropriate activity by simply looking out their windows. If they see someone on the property that doesn't belong there, a quick 911 call can ward off disaster. Provide them with a contact number in case they have concerns. Do you need to leave garbage cans on the street for collection? Ask a neighbor to put them away so they don't sit on the street while you are away. The key word here is "trusted." Keep the first tip in mind!

  • Disconnect Electronic Garage Doors.
Remote signals are easily hacked, leaving your home more vulnerable to intruders. Closing the garage door behind them, thieves have unlimited opportunity to ransack the house without interruption. By disconnecting the power supply to the garage door motor, you can foil their plans.

  • Consider a Security System
The average cost of a home break-in is around $2,800, so investing in a home security system could be worth it. In addition, these smart security systems often include ongoing remote monitoring to give you peace of mind whether you're out for the evening or gone for an entire week. Mansfield homes for sale that can offer added security through smart technology can command a higher price than otherwise comparable properties.

  • Forget Hidden Keys
No matter how clever you may think your hiding place is, an experienced burglar can find it. If you want to give access to your home to other people, leave the keys with them. Be sure to collect them again when you return. Another option is a smart lock on the door. Some models come with temporary codes that can be changed when no longer needed. Others can be accessed from your phone, allowing you complete control from any location.

  • Secure a House Sitter
An older, responsible teenage family member or a friend who would like to escape from roommates for a while may find staying in your house for a week a mini vacation. But they would still appreciate a little extra cash in their pockets. By coming in and out of the house while you are gone, the home will not appear vulnerable to would-be intruders. If you don't feel comfortable with either option, a professional sitter that has been vetted by a reputable agency could be a better solution. This is especially helpful if you have pets you would rather not take to a kennel while you're gone.

  • Maintain a Watchful Eye
A Ring doorbell can send phone notifications when motion sensors are activated. Record the activity with an annual subscription of $40 a year per camera on the basic plan. Videos of criminal activities can then be shared with police.
