Design a More Cohesive Home - Homeowners - Haring Realty

Ever walked into a house, and as you went from room to room, it just didn't flow very well? There's a reason why people spend so much money on interior design professionals. But you can do much of the work yourself!

One such strategy is to create a cohesive home. This design principle is based on generating an attractive and sensible flow as you move from one room to the next. Our REALTORS® have seen this done successfully in many Galion homes for sale, so they've come up with some quick tips on how you can accomplish this:

  • Decide on a Color Palette
To design a cohesive home, you should always begin by deciding on a color palette. Some homeowners take this to mean that they need to pick a few colors and then use those same colors in every single room. That's not the case. You need to ensure the colors and patterns relate to each other in some way. Also, begin with a neutral hue and add a few brighter ones.

  • Install Consistent Flooring
It's amazing the difference flooring can make, not just in the cohesiveness of your home but in its overall attractiveness. Whether you choose carpet, wood, tile, or another type of flooring, you should use the same throughout your house. There are exceptions, of course. If you have carpet throughout your home, you obviously don't want this type of flooring in your bathroom or laundry room.

  • Consistent Wood Stain & Trim
We'd definitely suggest that you choose a light wood stain throughout your home. Light colors will make each room feel brighter and more open, while darker colors often give the illusion that everything's more enclosed. You should also make sure that you're consistent with your trim. Although the flooring can be different in areas such as your bathroom and laundry room, the stain and trim should be consistent everywhere. It's a small detail, but also a very important one.

  • Repetition and Contrast
Speaking of small details, you should be using the art of repetition as a way to help your home feel more cohesive. In addition to stains and trim mentioned above, you should also show consistency with smaller items such as your door handles and knobs. That being said, you also need to use a bit of contrast, so all of those things don't have to be exactly the same. Just use similar styles between the rooms, and you'll be just fine.

  • Incorporate Proper Lighting
Lighting plays an essential role in the art of creating a cohesive home. You can start by using multiple light sources that provide ambient, task, and accent layers. One option is an ambient mood fixture with multiple color cycle settings. It seamlessly transitions from one color to the next, allowing you to create a cohesive environment that matches your color palette.

  • Choose Multiple Textures
One of the best things you can do for your home, regardless of designing a cohesive layout, is the use of multiple textures. This can be anything from putting different types of rugs in multiple rooms, adding plants and other greenery, or investing in vintage furniture to go along with modern pieces. Adding multiple textures around your home will create a visual landscape that allows each room to have a distinct look yet fit together as a whole.
