Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips for Homeowners - Haring Realty

If you love Halloween, it's time to prepare your home for the food and the festivities. Our REALTORS® want you to have a fun-filled night with spooky little trick-or-treaters who are excited about yummy candy, scary costumes, and furry creatures that go bump in the night.

As soon as the sun goes down in Galion neighborhoods, trick-or-treaters will make the rounds to load up their pumpkin pails with delicious treats. Before they arrive, you must ensure that your yard and home are safe for Halloween. Here are five tips for a safe, fun-filled evening.

  1. Light Up the Front Yard
Although a dark, spooky yard reflects the Halloween spirit, it can cause falls and injuries to small children wearing long costumes, hats and hoodies, and masks that impair vision. Light up your front yard for maximum vision to prevent falls and tripping hazards.

    • Place downlights or uplights in trees
    • Hang string lights in shrubs

    • Install pathway lights along the front walkway

    • Put lighted decorations on the roof

    • Add motion-sensor lights to the garage and front porch

    • Give trick-or-treaters light sticks to take with them

  1. Use LED Lights Instead of Candles
For Halloween festivities, LED lights are brighter and safer than candles. While candles in carved pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns create a spooky atmosphere, they also create fire and burn hazards for anyone who comes too close. Costumes can catch on fire if a pumpkin or jack-o-lantern gets knocked over near trick-or-treaters. LED lights, solar-powered lights, battery-powered lights, and light sticks are a much smarter choice for Halloween.

  2. Make Your Front Porch Safe
If you're in a busy neighborhood, you can expect handfuls of trick-or-treaters to show up at your front door. To prevent slip and fall accidents and injuries, ensure your porch is safe for all those little ghosts and goblins.

    • Move potted plants away from steps and the front door
    • Make sure decorations are secured to walls

    • Sweep and pressure wash the porch

    • Tighten loose or damaged railings

    • Repair any damage to steps

    • Use friction tape on steps for slip resistance

If it happens to rain on Halloween, make sure trick-or-treaters are not walking through puddles, along slippery walkways, or on slippery steps. Slippery surfaces are a major cause of serious falls and injuries.

  1. Purchase Packaged Candy and Treats
As tempting as it may be to cook up some special treats like homemade fudge, chocolate brownies, candied apples, and caramel nut bars, parents may not let their kids eat them. Sadly, Halloween pranks have created incidents of unsafe candy and dangerous things found inside candy and treats which cause injuries. Unless you know your trick-or-treaters and their parents, it's best to keep it simple and buy individually wrapped candies and treats that are safe.

  2. Keep Your Pets in the House
If you're a pet owner, your pets are likely a big part of family activities. Whether you have a big dog, a little dog, or a fuzzy feline, we know how much pet parents love their furry friends. With spooky costumes, loud noises, and lots of intruders in the yard, Halloween can be a frightening experience for pets that leads to anxiety and strange behaviors like constant barking or meowing, growling, jumping, hiding under the bed, whining, and unprovoked attacks. For a safe Halloween, keep your pets in the house.
