Avoid Staging Mistakes - Home Sellers - Haring Realty

Staging a home is one of the most effective ways to attract potential buyers. Like all things, it's easy to make a mistake when you haven't done it before. To help you out, our REALTORS® have put together a quick list of potential mistakes that you should avoid. 

  • Not Keeping It Clean
    Homeowners often make the most obvious staging mistake of not keeping everything clean enough. Once you decide to sell your house, you should act almost as if a potential buyer who's looking for Mansfield and Ashland homes for sale could walk through your doors at any moment. You should be cleaning up every evening or morning, intending to be able to present your home within a half hour or less.

  • Too Much Furniture
    As you spend years inside your home, many people tend to add more and more furniture to each room. While this is something that your brain has slowly become accustomed to, you may have added so much furniture that it could be overwhelming for a new person to see all at once. Get someone's opinion and remove a piece of furniture or two if they think a room is too crowded.

  • Mismatched Furniture
    It's time to face a harsh truth: Not all of us are perfect interior designers. When we stage a house, we could mismatch furniture and create an odd-looking presentation for potential buyers. If you're not confident of your skills—or even if you are—you may want to enlist the help of a professional or someone you trust who has impeccable taste to get everything just right.

  • Not Thinking About Pics
    The pictures you take of your home will often entice a potential buyer to check it out. This is why you must always consider how each room will look in a photograph in terms of colors, lighting, angles, etc. If you can present your home in the right way through pictures, people will already be in awe before they step through your front door.

  • Bad Household Smells
    We're betting that everyone reading this has had this experience in the past: You walk into someone's home, and it looks gorgeous, but then an awkward smell hits you, and that's all you can think about. The problem is that when your household smells funny, and you're living inside it, your olfactory senses will adjust so you won't notice anymore. If a friend tells you your home has a weird smell, figure out the source.

  • Too Many Knick-Knacks
    It's no secret that many of today's homes are filled with knick-knacks, whether it's movie memorabilia, action figures, shot glass collections, etc. While this can make a home look lived in and enjoyable, it isn't out of the ordinary to go a little bit over the top. If you look around and see 50 knick-knacks sitting around, you may want to put a bunch of them in a box.

  • Not Staging the Home
    We saved this one for last, but the truth is that it's a common faux pas. Some homeowners simply decide not to stage the home at all. They'll clean it up a little, but don't worry about the presentation. This may be perfectly okay if your home is typically a pristine environment, but in most situations, you need to spruce things up at least a little bit.
