Local Eats in Bellville: Buckeye Express Diner

Buckeye Express Diner
If you're traveling I-71 North, about an hour away from Columbus, you'll spot Buckeye Express Diner on a hill off to your right. The vintage steam locomotive and red passenger cars appear as though they took a wrong turn while leaving a movie set. It's more of a leap back in time to the days when Bellville was an Ohio train town. When you spot the trains, take the next exit. It will deliver you to State Route 97 and the Buckeye Express Diner.
Buckeye? It's Not About the Trees
The buckeye is Ohio's state tree, but the diner's theme isn't about trees at all. The restaurant is an Ohio State Buckeyes fan spot. Considering the name, it's proximity to OSU, and the train's bright Buckeye red exterior color, visitors figure that out before they step in the door.
Inside, Ohio State Buckeye flags and pendants adorn the walls. The wall trim and napkin-holders are red too. In the gift shop, you'll see an Ohio State Buckeye clock, a Buckeye blanket, Buckeye plush dolls, and even a Buckeye gnome. It's not about the trees.
The Food
Buckeye Express serves their custom-made version of comfort food. The menu includes homemade soups and a selection of wraps, subs, sandwiches, and big delicious burgers, all served with hand-cut fries. All of their sandwiches come in generous portions, but at 10-pounds, the Buckeye Belly Buster is the biggest sandwich on the menu. It has eight pounds of beef, two pounds of toppings and their homemade WOODY sauce.
The diner recently began serving breakfast dishes, including specials such as their Mexican Breakfast Burrito, Crepes with sweet cream cheese and blueberries, and the "Chicken Mess" with scrambled eggs, hash browns, grilled chicken, and several other ingredients. The diner shares breakfast and other menu specials on the Buckeye Express Diner Facebook page.
Gift Shop & Kids Play Area
If you want a memento of your Buckeye Express outing, you can purchase candy and gift items in the gift shop.
When the weather cooperates, your children will enjoy the Kids Play Area out back. There's a kid-size Buckeye Express train to keep the little ones busy and tables for parents to enjoy a meal outdoors.
